<image:caption>1. TALLBOY INTERIORS Tallboy Interiors brings together antiques and newly made pieces with a quiet confidence, creating collections that feel both grounded and relevant. There is a clarity to the way objects are chosen, an emphasis on craftsmanship, proportion, and materiality, resulting in pieces that honour their origins while sitting comfortably in contemporary interiors. For example, I adore this lovely piece of wall art made from an original two‑panelled 19th Century Chinese silk screen. Photo credit: @tallboyinteriors</image:caption>

<image:caption>Set in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, Brownrigg is a treasure trove for antiques and decorative pieces from the early 17th Century to the mid 20th Century. The owners, Jorge and David, are always bringing a fresh perspective, supporting clients in their quest for something different. <image:caption>Established in 1978, this wonderful department store in Chiswick was recently listed in the ‘100 best shops’ in the world by Retail Week. I can understand why this is the case. The store has incredibly diverse stock, from kitsch Americana to period antiques, Asian arts to French decadence. This ever-changing inventory makes The Old Cinema an exceptional shopping destination. An example of exemplary design, I stumbled across this delightful pair of large mid-century French sconces. <image:caption>Drew Pritchard founded his antiques and interior business over thirty years ago, focusing on conservation and restoration projects alongside the antique business. To quote, “His interiors are put together in a way that creates a comfortable, ever-evolving natural home, avoiding overly perfect styled rooms, designed with an eye to a life lived”. This 19th Century mahogany locker cupboard has a stunning moulded cornice and sprung brass locks on all fifteen doors. Photo credit: @drewpritchardantiques</image:caption>

<image:caption>Leading interior designer, Tamsin Saunders, founded her studio Home and Found in 2013 and consistently demonstrates her incredible ability to create effortlessly beautiful interiors which are described as ‘seamless’ and ‘undone’. In addition to her design projects, she sells 'Finds’ on her website. <image:caption>6. LORFORDS As Europe’s largest collection of decorative antiques, Lorfords is a wonderful place to explore for small and interesting pieces. Nestled in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, Lorfords also has a sister company, Lorfords Contemporary, making handmade upholstered seating close to their Tetbury roots in the Cotswolds. My favourite from this collection is the TP Modern Sofa, which has a wonderful straight skirt as the finishing touch to this delightful, simple and elegant sofa. When perusing their antiques today for a client project, I came across the most beautiful 19th Century English mahogany chiffonier. The top has a glorious glazed bookcase, and beneath is a two-door cupboard, flagged by carved columns. Photo credit: @lorfordsantiq</image:caption>

RETROUVIOUS A repeat favourite of mine is Retrouvious, led by Adam Hills and Maria Speake, who bring salvaged, reclaimed and vintage materials back into circulation through their shop and studio. If you are looking for furniture, lighting, accessories or architectural salvage, Retrouvious is a brilliant, creative destination. I stumbled across these small grooved alabaster pendant lights and instantly fell in love. These are dated from the 20th Century, the scuffs and chips commensurate with age, adding to the character of any interior. Photo credit: @retrouvius</image:caption>

Having spent time living in Hong Kong and Saigon, she has a distinctive style which fuses a Western aesthetic with Eastern design. Alongside antiques, Alice has developed a range of ottomans, wallpaper and a successful collaboration with Layered, a Swedish rug brand. There is a reason she has been featured regularly in interior publications. I wait with bated breath for her new pieces to arrive, as each piece is distinctive, individual and packed with character. There is not a piece I don’t like. I currently have my eye on this specimen top octagonal table, for one of my client projects; the detailing and edging are perfect. <image:caption>1. The Newt, Somerset: Elegant, earthy and very welcoming. Set in 300 acres of Somerset countryside, The Newt is one of those places that feels grown-up and grounded at the same time. The interiors are pared back but thoughtful: soft linens, wide-planked floors, warm stone and ironwork. Outside, there are apple orchards, gardens to lose yourself in, woodland walks and rare-breed farm animals. It's not marketed as a 'family hotel', but children are welcomed with genuine ease. <image:caption>The most enduring spaces are those where every element has been chosen with purpose. I often recommend modular furniture, generous built-in storage and bespoke joinery that can flex with time. A window seat that hides board games today might hold books or craft materials tomorrow. A well-designed alcove can house toys, a reading nook, or a printer, depending on the season of life. These aren’t design flourishes for their own sake. They are subtle, intelligent responses to the way we actually live, and they create breathing room within a home to grow and shift gracefully. <image:caption>Beaverbrook is a country house hotel with a bit of flair. The interiors by Susie Atkinson and Nicola Harding are full of colour, pattern and playfulness. It's all a little bit theatrical, in the best possible way. Children are made to feel completely at home, with a kids' club tucked into a Japanese-style treehouse, outdoor adventures, and a swimming pool in summer. It's proof that elegant doesn't have to mean formal. Design notes: English eccentricity, with a designer's eye. Think velvet, murals, patterned tiles and proper character. <image:caption>Overlooking the sea on a quiet stretch of the French Riviera, this former 1950s modernist hotel has been given a quiet, confident refresh. Interiors are minimal but warm: raw plaster, woven textures, concrete, terracotta and sun-bleached tones. Children are very welcome, but the atmosphere is unpretentious and calm. There's a saltwater pool built into the rocks and the Mediterranean just steps away. Design notes: Natural materials, no fuss. A sense of space and air; everything gently worn and sun-washed. <image:caption>Casa Cook might not shout 'family hotel', but it quietly caters to them. Family suites are set apart for a bit more peace and privacy, and the relaxed pace of life (all outdoor dining, splash pools and shady spots) makes it an easy place to stay with children. Interiors are simple and earthy: textured plaster, rattan, sculptural shapes and a soft, sun-baked palette. Design notes: Boho minimalism. A sense of calm without feeling sparse or showy. <image:title>Journal | Insights from Surrey Interior Designer Laura Charlick - Interiors that grow with families</image:title>
<image:caption>1. DESIGNING WITH ADAPTABILITY IN MIND One of the most valuable conversations I have early in a project is about how a client’s needs might change. A nursery may one day become a study. A spare bedroom might need to flex between workspace, playroom and guest suite. These evolutions are not just possible; they can be designed from the outset. Through spatial zoning, flexible furniture choices and clever joinery, we can create a sense of built-in adaptability. A dining area might also support remote working. A snug can transition into a teenager’s hangout. The aim is to anticipate these shifts in a quiet, considered way, so that the home naturally accommodates life as it changes. <image:title>Journal | Insights from Surrey Interior Designer Laura Charlick - Interiors that grow with families - 3. MATERIALITY THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME</image:title>
<image:caption>When designing family homes, longevity doesn’t mean compromising on beauty. Quite the opposite. Natural materials—solid timber, stone, unlacquered brass, natural linens—develop character over time. They soften, deepen, and age. They tell the story of the lives lived around them. I always encourage clients to invest in tactile, durable finishes that will stand up to everyday use without losing their charm. A floor that can take muddy boots and racing scooters. A worktop that hosts breakfasts, science projects and candlelit dinners. These materials form the backdrop to daily life, and they become more beautiful because of it. Photo credit: By Emma Burns. <image:title>Journal | Insights from Surrey Interior Designer Laura Charlick - Interiors that grow with families - 4. A recent project: evolving through the years</image:title>
<image:caption>One client came to me with a young family and a home that needed to work harder. We reimagined the ground floor to create an open-plan space that still allowed for quiet corners and clear zones. What began as a play space became a reading den, and later a space for a digital piano. The guest room was designed with an ensuite that would support visiting grandparents now, and perhaps an au pair or teen retreat in future. There was nothing ‘temporary’ about these changes. They were built in from the beginning, allowing the home to evolve with ease, without disruption or compromise. <image:title>Journal | Insights from Surrey Interior Designer Laura Charlick - Interiors that grow with families - 5. The quiet value of longevity</image:title>
<image:caption>Designing with longevity in mind doesn’t mean predicting the future—it means allowing space for it. When a home is carefully planned, it can accommodate growth without stress. And when materials are chosen with care, they allow a home to settle into itself with time. If you are about to embark on a renovation or reconfigure an existing space, I encourage you to think beyond the now. Ask not only what you need today, but what would make your life easier, calmer and more beautiful in the years to come. Because the best homes are not just well-designed. They are quietly prepared for everything still to come. Photo credit: By Lucinda Griffith featured in www.houseandgarden.co.uk</image:caption>

The wood arches around the restored windows are breathtaking and bring the country feel of Seyfried's out-of-town home to the city. The backdrop of the skyscrapers, along with the rationalised space, is a reminder of living immersed in a central urban area. For me, watching this video brought back memories of living in Hong Kong. I recognise that compact living experience all too well when I lived in my ‘cosy’ walkup apartment in an area called ‘Happy Valley’. There is nothing like a shoebox apartment to teach you the value of clever storage solutions and multifunctional spaces. Photo credit: www.architecturaldigest.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two Screens, 2024 | Willoughby Gerrish Massouras’ work captivated me with its complex relationship between history, memory, and the passage of time. His paintings, sculptures, and prints often focus on how public memory is shaped—by both the fragments we remember and those we forget. I loved how the gallery described his work as being “fragile yet stark,” capturing the delicate balance between permanence and impermanence in art. Two Screens embodies this idea, with its intriguing juxtaposition of layered visual elements and a sense of fragility simultaneously combined with strength. <image:caption>Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink, 1980 | Gerrish Fine Art This lithograph is a rare gem, produced by David Hockney for a 1980 book about his Paper Pool series. The series itself was created in 1978 when Hockney visited his friend and printmaker, Ken Tyler, at Tyler Graphics in New York. The piece speaks to the artist’s ongoing exploration of colour and texture, and I loved seeing how it ties into his broader creative journey. It’s one of those works that, while undoubtedly a significant investment, offers a deeper connection to Hockney’s practice. Photo credit: www.gerrishfineart.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pantagruel #1, 2024 | The Finch Project Mirko Baricchi’s Pantagruel #1 bursts with a powerful, almost otherworldly energy. The piece combines abstract shapes with fluid, expressive brushstrokes, creating an atmosphere of motion and transformation. Drawing inspiration from the fantastical themes of Rabelais’ Gargantua and Pantagruel, Baricchi delves into ideas of excess and metamorphosis. The painting’s vivid colours and bold forms seem to pulse with life, inviting the viewer to explore a realm that exists between the mythical and the real. The bird, illuminated by the monochrome palette, feels at once bold and serene, with every line accentuating its beauty. What I admire most about Gillespie’s work is how she channels her adoration for nature into her pieces, highlighting the fragility and wonder of the natural world. There is something uniquely immersive about his art—the way it considers our relationship with the world around us, especially nature’s overwhelming and constant presence. <image:caption>Litten Tree Antiques is based in a charming former chapel in Berkshire. Owner Elizabeth sells decorative antiques, textiles and vintage pieces. I am particularly fond of the lovely upholstered one-off pieces which are created by true craftsmen. This gorgeous country house open chair is upholstered in the stunning Rosa Bernal Sevilla Piedre Verde fabric. Photo credit: littentreeantiques.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Based in an old Salvation Army chapel in the vibrant town of of Rye in East Sussex, Soap and Salvation was established in 2021. It houses a wonderful curation of vintage and antique homewares, books, art and objects sourced from across the UK and Europe. This fabulous basketry twig mirror from France c1960 is a statement piece for a modern rustic interior. Photo credit: soapandsalvation.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sourcing both some fabulous mid-century pieces and designing their own range, Maud Vaughan has some wonderful pieces. It’s a perfect selection if you like an elegant and paired-back look which holds charm and character. I especially like the Wiggle Lamp featured here sculpted and forged from steel, handmade by artisan metalsmiths based in Yorkshire. Photo credit: maudvaughan.co.uk</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal | Insights from Surrey Interior Designer Laura Charlick - Buying antiques & Vintage - Retrouvius</image:title>
<image:caption>Founded in the 1990s by Adam Hills and Maria Speake, Award winning Retrouvius is both a shop and a studio which brings to life reclaimed, salvaged and vintage materials. Maria, a global phenomenon, leads the interior design side of the practice which showcases how these materials can be used through her creative designs. The shop is absolutely worth a visit, as is browsing through their ‘Guide to Reuse’ on their website. I love their unusual textiles including this fun flatweave rug depicting a colourful camping scene. Photo credit: retrouvius.com</image:caption>
